Food is usually good - however I got takeout and they packed my hot sandwich in the same container as the salad which I asked for the oil and vinegar dressing a little extra on the salad. However because it was in 1 flat container the dressing absorbed into the bread and when I got it home it was mush on the bottom - I tried to eat it just couldn't called up the owner chef picked up - I told him what happened he said it was my fault because I asked for extra dressing I said its because the salad and sandwich are packed together - he said do you want a new one I said I'd bring this back so I did - the waiter was very nice, I showed him and he said wow you can't eat that. And went to get the replacement - instead the owner came out very unhappy said it was not his fault that it was my fault I asked for extra dressing - he did give me a new one and packed it separately - handed to me but he made it clear to anyone listening that it was my fault - the waiter looked embarrassed - I apologized to the owner but I personally think they should pack the hot sandwich and cold salad in separate containers and not blame the customer for poor packaging job - not sure I really want to go back may pull their menu's from our rental rooms which we keep for our registered guests - I would be horrified if one of our guests was treated that way on recommendation

We were very happy to see they had a gluten free menu! Food came out fast. We will defiantly be eating here again!

This is hands down, the best authentic Italian restaurant I've ever been to. My family and I are Italian, and we experiment with Italian food at home and enjoy going to different Italian restaurants. This is by far, my personal favorite. Before walking in the doors, a worker (possibly the manager) was outside and talking to another customer in a thick Italian accent. This added to the authentic atmosphere, and we couldn't help but laugh because it was so cool. After drinking some of their house wine and snacked on their bread dipped in spiced olive oil, we had our main course. I ordered the Cannelloni Ripieni with cream sauce. I nearly died from how awesome the sauce was. The entire meal was delectable, and very filling. They don't shy away from filling your plate! The customer service was great too, the manager even came to our table and started talking to us and made sure we were satisfied. The atmosphere felt very homey and of course, the restaurant displayed cool Italian decorations/furniture. If you want an epic authentic Italian meal, (No, Olive Garden isn't authentic...) then come here!

Although one of my most favorite Italian restaurants is in Kauai, Il Lucano is 3rd after Pazzo in Portland. I enjoy the Spaghetti Vongole and that's usually what I order. Their spaghetti and meatballs is also good. My family enjoys the delicious Olive Oil and bread. The Oil has red pepper flakes, garlic, and some other herbs in it giving it great flavor for dipping. I definitely recommend this place to my friends and family.

Pretty good. When we were there the server was overwhelmed, but amusing so it was OK. The food was OK too Nothing to get all excited about but, based on the other higher-priced and more mediocre places in town it is a pretty reasonable choice.

Why do I have to leave Tacoma to get good Italian food? My husband was skeptical when we pulled up,--seeing the restaurant was located in an older strip-mall--but once we heard the specials we were hooked. Our delightful waiter (maybe the owner's son) rattled off a stunning number of specials for the evening: osso bucco, marinated pork chops, short ribs, 3 seafood specials, and two pasta dishes. I almost stopped the waiter at the osso bucco but allowed him to finish and opted for a beautiful beef and mushroom stuffed pasta with a rich creamy brown sauce with chunks of filet mignon. My husband was equally impressed with his 2 thick-cut pork chops stacked on top of each other and topped with a healthy portion of spinach. Finished off the mail with tiramisu which--unlike the other reviewer--I enjoyed very much. My husband liked that the owner stopped by our table. Give this place a try.

The main dishes were good and the service was great! My only complaint was the bread and oil to start. It was flavorless. Maybe that is the point? If it tastes like cardboard then you eat less of it saving room for a meal that seems like it has all the flavor.

We loved the food here. My wife and I oredered a Cesar salad with anchovies (never tried it like this) and we both loved it. Might have to try it on pizza, lol. For entrees, she had the special of the day, a penne with salmon and shrimp dish. It had a couple of different cheeses on it, one of them being feta. It was a little overwhelming to the rest of the dish and there was a lot of oil. However the salmon and shrimp were cooked pefectly. I ordered the lasagna. It was delicious! I could eat that every day. The only other downside here was the bread was served cold. Wish it had been toasted...

Best Italian in area by far! Next closest place is on the water in Poulsbo an hour away! I've been 6 or 7 days and have yet to find something on their menu that wasn't fabulous. The wife loves their Eggplant Parm, I love everything.

I think this could be the friendliest restaurant in Gig Harbor, not sure!! I do know that they are hell bent on having the best customer service they can, including when Michel (sp?), straight from Italy, comes out and greets you while taking a break slaving on his wonderful creations in the kitchen! Gee, some of these reviews i've been reading are way too picky - who CARES how they chop their basil? Geesh! Thank you Il Lucano for putting great Italian food, ambiance and customer service on the map in Gig Harbor!!! If it was in my budget I'd go once a week!!!

Prompt good service on a busy Saturday night. Ordered the linguini pescatore with white sauce...yuuuum! The chef even came out and greeting everyone individually, even said hi to my 3 yr old, great place.

No nonsense, Italian old country, family restaurant. The lamb shank spectacular. I felt as though my Gramma Natalina was feeding me after a winter afternoon tobogganing! From the 1/2 price bottle of wine special, to the calamari steak appetizer with spinach, roasted garlic, sun-dried tomatoes and olives. I may have lived under a rock but I've never had it like that and it is the perfect starter salad for a few. The tiramisu could've been a little more old world but was scrumptious nonetheless. We had a great dinner and the owner came out and greeted everyone... nice touch. THE Italian in Gig Harbor.

Great local italian - authentic food and great service. Some amazing veal dishes, pastas are fantastic, and the cannelloni is to die for. Pair with your favorite Pinot for a real treat. Plus, owner/chef Michele will probably come welcome you into a true italian family style treat. With such a convenient location, it's hard to pass up.

You must experience this for yourself! A truly remarkable experience. The Staff, The Food, The Prices, all amazing. The Owner/Operator came out and greeted us and everyone else dining, he continued to come and check on each customer. We share appetizers and had dinner. It was all extraordinary. There were several items on the menu that were reasonably priced. This is a perfect place for lunch or dinner.

FYI If you order food to go you are expected to go thru a table waiter so they can get a tip. That's not the real problem..... You are asked the order takers name. Well they don't tell you that you need to remember or ask for a specific person on the phone. Then you go through the search for the waiter by a rude waiter that doesn't really want to be bothered as they won't be the one getting a tip just for talking to you on the phone. After getting the food home it was a pasta gum ball, meatballs were good but I think there are better options if you just want to get food to take home.

    (1)
  • Jen L.

It was mediocre at best. The pizza tasted decent, but as we ate it, at each bite ALL the toppings came off because of how they layered it. It was wet and soggy. Our other guest had enjoyed their earlier experience, but this time his pasta dish was much smaller in portion (both times dinner time, although before the owner was there) and the meatballs were burnt. They weren't busy at this time of day. The waitress was kind at first and then was overbearing. I had looked forward to going, but will not return.

We have lived in The Harbor for 10 years and had never tried Il Luciano. WHAT A MISTAKE! My hubby, 4 year old son and I ate there tonight and it was such a great experience! A family owned and operated true Italian restaurant with GREAT flavors. We will definitely be back VERY SOON, and suggest you give them a try as well.

We were running around late trying to find a place in Gig Harbor to celebrate my brother-in-laws birthday. Every place we stopped said the couldn't serve us at 8:40. Out of desperation we stopped here and it was the best decision we made! I will be back.

  • Mrs M.

The food was good, it just wasn't what I ordered. The waitress already seemed stressed so I ate it. I think she owned the place. She was really funny and charming. Everyone enjoyed there food. We also really liked all the lemon desserts. The flute was the best. I gave it only 4 stars because my food was wrong and so were our checks. Charm goes along way we just payed and left.

This place was so good, we sat out side and the service was great our server was rich he was great with our kids! Kids had the Classico pizza and we had the rib eye steak it was so good. We also had the ceasar salad and it was so good, very different but in a really good way. Was more mustardy. Loved all of it!

  • James C.

Absolute, pleasant surprise. I had the Eggplant Parmasean, wife had the Spinach Ravioli and the kid had the Spaghetti - all very good! The ingredients were fresh and the Ravioli was one of the better dishes I've had. Great staff and the owner comes out to thank you personally. Going back, for sure.

We stopped in for lunch, it was our first time here. As soon we opened the door we greeted by an exceptionally friendly employee, she said pick a table and I will follow you. Lunch is probably different than dinner in that respect because I am sure this restaurant is busy at night. We had the Calamari to start and it was absolutely wonderful, we followed up with Pasta and Meatballs and a sandwich. The food was terrific, there were probably 25 other people in the restaurant and all their dishes looked fantastic as well. Service was top notch, our waitress was a joy to talk to, I believe the owner came around and visited every table asking how the food was and talking to his guests. This was a very pleasant experience we will be back.

Having just left, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Six different entrées with all six being delicious! Four separate desserts that were each fabulous! Wonderful waiter and the owner came out to greet us as well as other customers - very friendly atmosphere. We will be back :)

Excellent food, excellent service and great atmosphere. The food was very authentic Italian...can't believe this place has been there 7 years and this is the first time I tried it! Will be a favorite spot from now on!

  • William K.

Fantastic food and really accomodating for a family. No kids menu with dumbed down mac and cheese. Get anything in a smaller portion for them. My daughter got clams which you normally cant get in a kids portion. Very happy we found and it we'll definately be back.

  • Marimo A.

It's not their food that turned me off (although bread was just OK, pasta wasn't bad). Wine bottles. All, over, the, place. I thought they're usually stored sideways in a dark place. I couldn't help myself looking at them...tried to think maybe they're part of the decorations...but no. There's even a bottle on each table. It was sort of overwhelming in a not attractive way. It was a beautiful day during lunch time. Everybody was taken to outside or window side...but me. And somehow the server made me sit NOT facing the window. So here I am, isolated from everybody else enjoying the sun therefore nothing to do but checking out wine bottles. My paranoia started to kick in thinking if I wasn't welcomed there...not dressed up enough? Ethnicity? Being alone? What? Not going back.

After living in Naples, Italy for 3 years, I can tell you this is a REAL DEAL Italian restaurant. It should be, because the chef/owner, Michele Simone, is from that general region of Italy. The servers are very friendly and it is not uncommon for Chef Simone to visit your table to ensure you are happy with your meal. Ambience is very Italian and the restaurant is kept clean and inviting. My wife and I have eaten at Il Luncano several times and have never been disappointed in a meal whether it's pizza or panini for lunch, or chicken/veal Parmesan or for dinner. A huge selection of pasta dishes is offered, however personally, I became a huge fan of spaghetti a la carbonara after having it for the first time in my life in Rome. Chef Simone did not disappoint and I now find it very hard to climb out of the spaghetti a la carbonara rut when thinking about pasta for a meal! It is that good and authentic. I have tried making it myself with marginal success which is one reason for my pasta "rut". Perhaps one of these days I can get him to share the "secret" method with me as I love that dish so much. The overall menu is equally extensive, but it doesn't stop there. The server will present you with an impressive and very detailed list of their daily specials, usually without having to refer to a cheat sheet. Wish my memory was that good. :-( These items tend to be more expensive entree's, but well worth the price! I had the lamb shanks one night when it was one of the specials being offered. OMG, it was the best I have ever had in my life. The food is nothing short of fantastic. Check out the menu on their website and by all means, give them a try. You won't regret it and then you can say you know what authentic Neapolitan food tastes like. Thank you so much Chef Simone for bringing a little bit of Naples to Gig Harbor for us to enjoy. Bella Napoli

Excellent food and service. Don't let the strip mall location fool you. Nice place for lunch or a date night.

This place was great! If Olive Garden is a 10 on it's best day, this place was a 20! The four of us all ordered something different and we all had a small bite of each others food. Everyone like everybody else's dish very much.

If I could give this restaurant negative stars, I would. I came here tonight with an open mind. But I was not prepared for such low quality food. I ordered a lasagne that tasted like food from Sbarro. I also ordered the carbonara and calzone. The carbonara is a disgrace. The calzone was mediocre at best. Attention, Il Lucano, you are not a local gem. You are simply local. And even if your food were real Italian food, it would be simply be bad "real Italian food." Being authentic does not negate the fact that your food is terrible. What, you don't think there are any bad restaurants in Italy? I lived in Italy for 8 years and I can tell you that there is a range in quality of restaurants just like any where else. Hence, the fallacy of your authenticity argument. Get a new chef. Learn how to cook pasta al dente and real sauce, not something that taste like cardboard.

While the service was good, the food was not worth the money. The bread was okay, but should have been warmed before service. The salads were average. My wife ordered the manicotti. The cheese filling was good but lacked in quantity such that the manicotti was nearly flat. It was topped by a meat sauce so heavy with meat, it could hardly be called a sauce. I had the veal saltinbocca. While I expected a slightly salty dish (it does include prosciutto), it was over salted to the point of being nearly inedible. The veal itself was overcooked and rubbery. The white wine sauce was watery, making the pasta slippery and difficult to handle. We shared a profitterol for dessert. The portion was way too small for the price with only two golf-ball sized pastries.

Amazing authentic Italian. Love this place and come here as often as we can. Spaghetti Carbonara is excellent amongst many other dishes. Highly recommended if you like Italian.

Seriously this restaurant is one of the best Italian restaurants I have ever been too. They treat you like you are a dear member of the family. Food is excellent. Atmosphere is great and Michele the chef is as Italian as they come! The calzones are amazing.

  • Carol J.

Great place!!! Will be back, lamb was perfectly cooked and homemade gnocchi was Delilah! I think only fresh pasta should be on menu though, but that is my opinion. Food was great as is the atmosphere! The owners are friendly and the chief makes a point to come out and ask about the food!!

  • Gina C.

I don't give much a five star but when you go to a place for the first time and you feel welcomed and get great service well then 5 stars it is! The food was wonderful! The veal was delicious and even though we got there toward closing, they treated us as if we were the first ones in for the day. Thank you for having us and we will be back.

Fantastic. Great ambiance, delicious food. Great start to a relaxed night out. Our server was very attentive. we were in and out in under an hour with plenty of time to make our movie at Uptown down the road. Owner came out and greeted us, which was a nice touch. I am still dreaming about the panna cotta we had for dessert.

A hint of oregano with Italian seasonings dripping from the tip of a cheese covered parmigiana followed the simple salad that was served with a unique italian dressing. With serving sizes fit for a king I found myself taking home more than 3/4 of the meal. The family enjoyed the meal as well with little to complain about. The ambience is nice. An Italian decor mixed with a hint of the Orient, reflecting the owners love for his wife. Wine bottles are on every table which although questionable in terms of long term taste - in regards to the wine and its temperature - serves to connote long summer evenings enjoying good food and fine Italian decor. Appetizers are made with love. Salads are fresh and the dressings appear original. Through a small veneer one can see the chefs preparing the meals the old fashioned way. Spinning pizza dough, toppings carefully selected and presented mark only the beginning of the gustatory adventure. Biting into a parmigiana reminds one of the gustatory delights found in Liz Gilbert's book Eat, Pray, Love. The seasonings ripple in the mouth. Each time that I eat this, it is slightly different, reflecting the original nature of the food. The Italian soda is made with half and half instead of straight milk and this seems to add to the taste in a very good way. This Italian Soda is not a sugar ladened desert in a glass. The wine is served in a generous glass and the desserts appear home made and again there is attention to detail in its presentation. The service is very good and our relatively large party of five was served swiftly with care taken to ensure that everyone was satisfied. I highly recommend Il Lucano. It is one of the best Italian restaurants that I have had the pleasure of attending

This is definitely my favorite restaurant in the Tacoma area. I have been about 5 times, each time having a wonderful experience. The food is amazing: large portions and lots of options. I always get the gnocchi; it's incredible. Each time we have been here, the staff is attentive and the owner comes to the table to say hi and make sure everything is good. The desserts are very good, also. Save room. Highly recommended.

I was looking for a Christmas gift for a co-worker and thought a gift certificate to a nice Italian restaurant would be just the thing. I came during lunch time and I knew I was in trouble when driving by the most delicious aroma filled my car. I knew I had made the right decision. I came in with the sole intention of buying my gift certificate then leaving but once I saw the extensive Gluten Free menu I had to check it out. I finally narrowed down my selections to two... the penne puttanesca and the vegetarian gluten and diary free lasagna. They both sounded heavenly. In the end the puttanesca won out but I'll definitely be back to try the lasagna. Give it a try, you won't regret it.

I love this resterant ! Food is really good and the owner is amazing. It's a bit pricey but I feel like it's worth it. The bread is to die for.

  • Rex C.

Kelsey and I went here for one of our nights out and the food was great. I got the penne lucano and it was as good as it sounded in the description. We will definitely go back. A man I suspect was the owner was out on the floor greeting everyone individually. Really gave the whole experience a more personal touch. To tell you the truth it was so good I made my own attempt at making it for the family the next week and it was a huge hit. I can't wait to go back for the atmosphere and maybe get some new meal ideas for the family. Oh the only negative was the bruschetta appetizer we got. I suspect there are some people who would have enjoyed it but the smothering of oil and seasoning was a little overpowering for my wife and me. I'm guessing by the quality of the rest of the meal this was more a matter of taste then any deficiencies on their part.

My first time at Il Lucano was nearly 7 years ago and I never forgot it because of the stunning food and the warm staff. Being in the Bay area, I am spoiled by food. I'm serious. You name it, San Francisco, Oakland, or Berkeley would have it BUT not Italian like this. When I describe how happy the food makes me the best way to understand it would be: It's the Italian restaurant that will ruin all Italian restaurants. None will ever compare and none will ever be as satisfying or memorable. Now, I love food so I don't care If it's a dive or a gem but the food has to be solid. Last week I came back to the quiet town of Gig Harbor and had to taste the savory goodness of Il Lucano and it was even better than I had remembered. I had the grilled lamb with freshly made papperdelle and wild boar ragu. My husband had the infamous pork shops. My 2 year old toddler has the soup of the day, Beef barley with pancetta, and he LOVED It! I'm glad to see the restaurant has thrived since I first ate there and I hope it continues to thrive. Also, they have cooking classes and they get booked up fast! So if you're adventurous for an authentic culinary experience you should inquire about their classes. Ciao!

Had a great birthday dinner. They are very friendly and attentive. I had a gluten free vegan lasagna and it was delicious. The red sauce was to die for. I would definitely recommend it and would go back.

This was fantastic! Dont mess with downtown Seattle parking, make the nice drive to quiet Gig Harbor and eat dinner at Il Lucano! My husband had the pork chops that everyone was raving about, we couldnt find them on the menu however they were the special for the evening that the waitress told us about. Maybe they are a secret. I had the quattro formaggi but couldnt stop stealing the sun dried tomatoes from across the table. The size of the entrees were big, the price was about 27 (pork) and 17 (quattro formaggi). The place was packed from local art walk but they kept us great. Owner was among the staff greeting everyone and singing "Happy Birthday" to a few people. After stuffing yourself take the walk along the water. This is a small, cute walking town that is perfect for a date night. The drive is nice too :)

  • Jackie B.

I went here to celebrate my birthday. Everything was amazing! For appetizers we had the Bruschetta and the Caprisi salad (split between 8 people). Everyone enjoyed them both. For dinner I had the Gnocchi Sorrento, and added Italian sausage. Gnocchi was delicious and I am very happy I added the sausage. Everyone at our table was really happy with their food. For dessert they brought me Tiramisu. Very good and definitely big enough to share. The staff was extremely friendly and it seemed like the owner was was walking around greeting everyone. The only downside was that they originally forgot my husbands order (we had a table of 8), but when they noticed they apologized and brought his out within 10 minutes. We would all definitely go back again if ever eating in the Gig Harbor area!

  • Julie S.

Simply wonderful. We came in with a desire for something Italian and had never been here before. We were warmly welcomed and quickly seated. She went through all the specials for us and then gave us an unhurried minute to decide. The entire menu sounded good, not to mention the specials, so it was hard to decide. The food was fantastic! It was so flavorful, perfectly mixed and proportioned. My husband and I split the spaghetti carbonara and cantelloni because we each had a hard time deciding on just one item, and our third person ordered the lobster ravioli special. Mmm, simply delicious! The spaghetti carbonara was rich and eggy while still being full of meat. The noodles were a perfect texture. We had the red and white sauce on the cantelloni and it was rich and had a nice tang to it. The desert was not perfect, but I would be willing to try some of the other options. We tried the Pannacotta, which tasted like bland flan with a very berry filled sauce, which was pretty good. We also tried the Zabaglione, which was very heavy on the wine and completely overwhelming.

I am SO GLAD that I found this quaint little Italian eatery. A friend and I were at the Summer Art Festival when we stumbled in here for lunch. There are few things that can make me want to cross the bridge, but I will cross the bridge to eat here again! First, let's talk about the food and drink. WOW. I wish I could remember what glass of wine we finally settled on. It was delicious. We ordered a bruschetta appetizer, then I had one of the lunch specials, a penne pasta with salmon and shrimp and 4 cheeses. YUM YUM YUM. Though I cleaned my plate, with such terrific food coming out, I couldn't say no to the opportunity for dessert! My friend and I ordered an cannolo and a tiramisu. Both were phenomenal! It was the perfect lunch for our fun girls' day out. The staff was also very friendly and knowledgeable of both the menu and the wine list. Of course, I'm pretty sure the guy who was helping us was the owner or head chef, but he was a kick! We had such a wonderful time and a wonderful meal...I'm certain we'll be back for more!

What a great surprise to find this place on a random Saturday night! We both ordered specials and the food was amazing! It was more pricy than we'd hoped, however. 2 entrees, an appetizer and 3 glasses of wine and we hit a hundred dollar bill. Definitely with a try for a nice date night.

We really enjoyed our visit! The food was delicious and the staff was very friendly. I had the chicken piccata. It was topped with fresh wilted spinach. Not only was the presentation beautiful, but the food was great as well. They brought out a great toddler plastic plate and fork for my daughter. We can't wait to come back and introduce more people to this place!

I am not sure how anyone could`ve been disappointed with the food here? I`ve eaten here over a dozen + times and have never been disappointed. The free bread is a little bland in my opinion but the oil and vinegar dipping sauce makes up for it. Not on the menu as an appetizer but I surely recommend them are the meatballs. They are fabulous with or without sauce. I`m still trying to figure out what they use in them? As for the entrée you can`t go wrong with anything on the menu. The specials are incredible but hard to remember as the waiters rattle them off at a break neck pace. That shows me they are well educated on the menu. All the waiters would gladly go over them again to assist you in your decision making. An excellent selection of wines can be had at reasonable prices, especially on Tuesday when it's half price. I'm not a big dessert fan but would recommend the lemonchello flute. A great palate cleanser which is extremely light. Il Lacano`s also has a nice selection of after dinner motifs. So if you somehow had a bad expirence you need to go back and give it another try.

The ambiance of this establishment is awesome, service is outstanding and the Meals are very good. I ordered the New York steak, cooked as ordered and very tasty. My wife ordered the house special "little hats pasta" with beef tenderloin medallions , she said she loved it but the portion could have been a bit more generous. The cost was reasonable and we pan to go back soon.

Very delicious! My aunt and uncle are friends with the owner and his wife, who were very hospitable! It was great to have that genuine Italian feel on the west coast, since I missed that being away from home. I would highly recommend this place. Great for a date!

This is one of the best Italian restaurants in Pierce County. Went on a Tues night, and it was full of customers. Good sign. My friend had the Maritati pasta special with shrimp, scallops and an incredible saffron and rosemary sauce. I had the linguine with seafood. Also very tasty - although I plan on going back for the Maritati... We ordered the lemon sorbet frozen into a lemon for dessert. It was the highlight of our dinner. Refreshing and light without being sour. Not usually a fan of sorbet, but this one is a must-try. Service was excellent, and really enjoyed meeting the owner, who took time to greet everyone in the restaurant. Can't wait to try the other specials soon.

I almost gave the restaurant a 3 star review but the last 5 minutes of our dinner experience was not the best. Staff was polite and the restaurant was ambiance was nice. Our waitress was polite up until the last five minutes of the meal. Our waitress had a very thick Asian accent and it was difficult to understand her. When she went over the specials with us at the table it was extremely difficult to understand what they were. She confused a Lamb shank with Ossobuco ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Os… ) during the description of the special and tried to argue that a lamb shank and OSSOBUCO was the same thing. The special dishes she described became confusing. She also described this truffle dish to us but when I inquired about the truffles as to whether they real truffles or the oil she told us it was the oil and not the real stuff. A poor description. I ordered the Lamb shank and it was perfectly prepared and I was very satisfied. I ordered the Tirmisu because that's how I judge an Italian restaurant. The Tirmisu was acceptable but not great. She came back over to inquire about the desert. I told her I would give it 2.5 stars out of 5. Than she began to argue with me about the authenticity of their Tirmisu because her husband the chef was born in Italy. Than she challenged me. In her heavy Asian accent she asked if I was born in Italy. I replied no but told her I am Italian and was born NYC. I have had Tirmisu all over the place. In fact I make it home right down to the lady fingers. I told her that it barely had any moscopone cheese and the lady fingers soggy. Not authentic. She told me they use one small tub of cheese 4 oz for an entire dish. In my opinion there was no cheese just soggy lady fingers. They need to revisit the authenticity of their Tirmisu. If you ask me they were trying to save a buck.

This is the very best place around the south sound to eat! We had a party of 30 of us, and we were well taken care of, the food was absolutely amazing, the staff was very friendly and attentive, and the owner made it a 'night to remember'! They fulfilled everything they said they would, and went above and beyond that! We had the 7 course meal and bottles of red wine. Oh my goodness what a feast... I have heard back from many that attended the dinner and here are some of their comments: "this is the best food I have ever had", "Amazing food and their gluten free menu is to die for", "it was amazing!", "that was the best meal I've ever ever had", "it was fantastic", "absolutely amazing!", "That was by far the best 7 course meal I've ever had", "So amazing, so very very AMAZING!", "The owner took special care of us and was very hospitable. I love his accent and jovial personality. I will most definitely be going back.", "Best ever! Soooooo good!", "so, so yummy". We ended the meal with a Sicilian Cannoli that was to die for. What a terrific evening and an awesome restaurant! This is a 'destination' restaurant that you will want to spend some time at. Enjoy!

Love the food and the awesome owner. Also loved his Grappa collection. Must ask for a Caffe Correcto as a pick me up. The soup of the day was beef barley which was quite nice. Perfect portions of food (smaller than most American places) healthy menu.

Best Italian in the Harbor....well that's not hard since if you don't count pizza and pasta joints this may be the only Italian in town! Been here a few times 4 stars is being a little generous for overall, if it was just on food alone would give this place strong 4.5... Really! This could be the best kept secret in the harbor on food alone... It just misses the mark on something I just can't quite put a finger on... They have "specials' most nights and they are great. But this where we come to the non food only issues. I hate to say it but I feel it is a little over priced for the space. This has a very bistro type feel and specials are all over $25. The space is loud, open old store front building with single pane large windows facing a parking lot..... OK, so that is the bad. If that sounds bad to you. So to contradict myself on price the menu offers pizza and pasta dishes up to $15 range that are great! There vongole made with local Minter creek clams is one of best ever had. Puttanesca is great, have had gnocchi very good. specails are always very good with fresh local seafood or leg of lamb, Osso bucco, ect. You could make a meal out of just the antipasti menu. The Bruschetta is huge. Salads are reasonable price. Wine menu is very good also. Just had a wine from same region as owner/ chef $39 was very good. Overall, t his is must try in Harbor for Italian. If from out of town on your boat it is just a short walk up from the dock. Not a fancy place just good food. If I could afford the specials I'd eat here every week!

Had reservations for 8 to celebrate my birthday. We have never been to this restaurant before and I wanted to try something new for a change, get away from "our favorite restaurant" routine. Read good reviews on Il Lucano and was very hopeful that we would have a good experience. We were not let down. The service was awesome, the atmosphere was amazing, and the italian food was excellent. I try to balance my reviews with the "positives" and the "negatives", but the only thing I can say needs improvement is the parking, and it was not that bad (found a spot in less than 4 minutes). I know, that is not much to complain about, but like I said... it is difficult to find anything negative about this experience. I know we will be coming back frequently in the future and we are very happy to have added to our "favorite restaurant" list. Thanks Il Lucano, for making my birthday a great experience!!

Had a lovely dinner here. Ambiance is great despite it being located in a strip mall. Bruschetta was amazing!

  • Emily W.

The decor seemed cluttered and outdated. The food was good but there were decisions made during its preperation that gave us pause. The spinach salad was served in a broth with soggy croutons and the gnocchi was served with dry basil on top instead of fresh. The basil was a particular offense considering we were in a resturant boasting homemade dishes. How hard is it chop a little fresh basil? Seriously!!... When you specifically mention basil as an ingredient we expect fresh basil! If you mean dried basil just don't even bring it up!! Oh, and bring a recording device if you ask to hear the specials! There are so many that you will lose track as the waitress states each of the 30 ingredients in each dish at break neck speed! No kidding, you will feel dizzy when she stops talking!! We did!

Gluten free like me? This is the place to go for amazing Italian food! Sounds like an oxymoron, right? Good Gluten-Free Italian? I thought so, too. My parents live near here and are always on the look out for a gluten free restaurant, so we gave it a try. AMAZING! The food was delicious, and there were many choices for gluten free, not just 2 items like many places. Chef Michele and his wife were extremely friendly and hospitable as well. I felt like we were being invited into their home. Michele came and chatted with us several times and really made us feel welcome. I'm so happy this place exists. I don't make it to the peninsula often, but I will definitely make a pit stop there when I do! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

This place is bloody brilliant, sorprendente, delizioso, . My fiance had looked up gluten free options in the area, Il lucano popped up with such an extensive gluten free menu we knew we needed to try it. I finished performing a wedding in Tacoma and raced over for dinner. The dipping sauce is brilliant, Gluten free Pizza Quattro Formaggi was grand. Caprese delicious and the Mozzarella quite juicy and delicate. The owners are so delightful

Fantastic food! The dipping oil for the bread was the best I've had anywhere. All of our dishes were tasty, including our 4-cheese pizza with added mushrooms. We were with a large family group, as was another group -- seems like a very friendly place for families and gatherings. Staff were extremely friendly as well. Will definitely return!

My first time here today. I came for lunch. They have an extensive Italian menu. I ordered a sausage and pepperoni pasta. The waitresses is very attentive. The food is great. I love the authentic Italian decorations. As expected, there's enough food for leftovers. Strongly recommend this restaurant to anybody.

  • Quinn R.

Hey are you gluten free? (I'm not) Do you like pasta but can't eat it because you're gluten free? (Again totally not me) However if this is you, they have an extensive gluten free pasta menu. Which I think is awesome. So not only is their italian food good but it's also (can be) gluten free. I tried the gluten free pasta and it wasn't for me but I'm told it is the best gluten free pasta can be, so if that is a limitation I say go nuts. Besides that family owned feel, the owner or chef came out and said hello. He was very friendly and all the food was great. I'll be back again.

I have been here five or six times. Incidntally, you'll see references to the chef's name. He's fellow - and I'm not sure how to spell it, but it is pronounced, "McKELLY." I think he spells it 'Michele." Anyway ... Reliably outstanding, with an amazing number of 'specials' that every waiter (usually the owner's wife, the owner, or one of a couple of trusted servers) can describe in detai, without notes. Just phenomenal cooking. A really well-kept secret. I usually get the lasagna, and my lady, some seafood dish. Il Lucano, I gather, means, 'The Wolf' ... the city in Italy the owner is from. Authentic, all the way through ...

I LOVE this place! We go for birthdays and anniversaries and special occasions and the owner/chef always comes out and shakes our hand and his wife is always so sweet. The food is superb and the service is excellent. I would recommend this place to everyone!

Hands down the most authentic italian food in the area. Outside looks like tiny cafe, but inside the tiny cafe is decorated nicely and the staff are wonderful. The owner and chef is awesome and frequently comes out to greet the guests. Everything we have gotten is amazing. Great flavor, plenty of food, and easy access. Lots of options, something for everyone. An absolute must try!!!!!!

Pork chops! Wow! Amazing. this was our first meal there. the portion was about 14 oz of pork chop in addition to the pasta and cooked spinach that came with it, temperature was great taste was great and all for about 20. and the house salad by itself is only 3 bucks....great deal if you just want a salad. the atmosphere is semi intimate, friendly and very italian. The head chef comes out if its your birthday and they all sing, it was a very family oriented experience. we have been back twice and both times have been great :D

We must have gone on an off day, as our experience with this restaurant was quite the opposite of some of these reviews. However, we will definitely not be going back or recommending this place...a waste of $100. Everything from the general feel of the place, which was dark, cluttered and dusty. To the appearance of the server (someone you would expect in a diner, not in a higher priced place). The bread was cold, dipping oil was bland and the expensive crab stuffed ravioli wasn't edible...the crab tasted canned and the sauce was bland. I ate one and pushed my plate away. When the server came to collect the dishes, she didn't ask if there was a problem, offer something else or to comp my dinner. Unprofessional. My husbands meatballs tasted rubbery and frozen. I was absolutely shocked that this same restaurant got such great reviews. The only positive was a delicious bottle of Pinot noir.

Il Lucano was our choice for my families weekly restaurant stop this week. We decided to give Il Lucano a go based on all the good reviews. All in all we were somewhat dissapointed. The price for a plate of food will run you from $15-$30 and we knew that going in. The food was all very good but i was very put off by the differences in portion sizes. I ordered seafood Penna and my Son ordered Spaggetti and meatballs and both of us got nice sized portions but my wife ordered Canneloni and got 3 little canneloni in the middle of a huge plate for $15($5 per piece). Looking around other customers tables at their orders i noticed the same thing. Large portions and tiny portions. Would like to see a fair consistancy in portion size. The bread and oil at the table was very good but the waitress was stingy with the bread bringing 4 very small pieces at a time for 3 people and we had to keep asking for more because she wouldnt voluntarily bring more. Dont get me wrong with the waitresses because they all seamed very professional and nice just a tad bit robotic. When she did bring more it was another 4 small pieces. In my humble opinion the Il Lucano is just to overpriced. It's location isnt anything great and for their prices you should get a salad included with your meal and get more generous bread servings. Our bill was $72 + Tip and all 3 of us had water. If your loaded with $$$ and money is no object then Il Lucano is a nice choice. Another of many restaurants i have come across in Gig Harbor that tends to cater more to the wealthy crowd which there is plenty of in Gig Harbor. Not for simple folk. I am an Italian food snob. I was fortunate enough to live in italy and I have high expectations as a result. This is the best and I was so freaking excited that we were told to go there and even more excited when i had the best involtini de Parma EVER. I love Michele and Azusa. I dreamed about the food last night after we went and I want to go back every night. fabulous! I hope they stay here forever...what a gem.

So....I'm ruining the five star streak. We were SO excited to try this place after reading the reviews. My (very Italian) fiancé called for a reservation and got an authentic Italian on the phone! Our anticipation grew. When we arrived, the sign on the door said 1/2 price wine with 2 entrees. Even better! We were quickly seated, it was almost 9 so the place was starting to clear out. We started with a bottle of the house wine (not good) and the prosciutto wrapped prawns. The prawns were tough and at least one of the four hadn't been deveined. The prosciutto was dry. Then the breadbasket came. Yikes. Bland, dry, uninspired little slices- this is supposed to be an Italian joint! At this point the fiancé commented that the Italian accent on the phone may have been fake. We ordered 2 entrees from the specials menu- veal Marsala for him and frutti di mare linguini for me. Keep in mind this place is on the harbor. Dinner came out fast, and we eagerly dug in. The pasta was...boring. Not much flavor, and the seafood situation was pretty grim. The mussels and calamari were past their prime- fishy. The clams were gritty and the one little piece of halibut was dry. More tough prawns too. The saving grace would have been the delicious salmon, but alas there was only a tiny piece. The pasta was not homemade. His veal was tough, bordering on questioning whether it was actually veal. The Marsala sauce was quite good though. By the time we muddled through the place was empty. Just as we were preparing to decline dessert we heard the guys in the kitchen yucking it up over so-and-so and his hilarious fake Italian accent- suspicions confirmed. Then the bill came, turns out 1/2 price wine is only on Tuesdays. For how much we spent ($110 after tax and tip) I am VERY disappointed. Thank goodness we have a reservation at Spinasse tonight! Sorry to blow the rating and for all of the complaining, but I hope others will save their hard earned money for something more worthy.

Having experienced North Beach Italian, New York Italian, and local throughout Italy, I can state, "I know Italian" and Il Lucano is the REAL DEAL! In fact, I have not had anything this exquisite and so affordable in the Kitsap area since I moved here from Northern CA in 1993. I am still in awe of the experience two weeks after the meal. All I can say is that EVERYTHING we had was amazing and when we spoke to others, they said the same thing. Il Lucano is a rich dining experience. I encourage you to discover this yourself ... Buon Appetito!

I was very very impressed with my visit here recently. I was pretty excited to go here after reading the reviews and was not let down. The atmosphere in here was wonderful and our waitress was very helpful and attentive. Ordered up a bottle of the house wine (it's ok), some calimari, and the Veal Marsalla for myself and the (sigh....) Spaghetti with Meatballs for my wife. Calamari was cooked perfectly avoiding the rubbery feel that I get with a lot of calamari. My Veal Marsalla however stole the show with a sauce that haunts my taste buds now. Simply fantastic. My wife really enjoyed her Spaghetti as well and was pleased to see how it was sauced (I really hate over sauced pasta). I've got no issues with the place and I would go back in a heartbeat.

My favorite restaurant in Gig Harbor! The food, service, and atmosphere cannot be topped. The pork chop special and the seafood pasta special are my favorites. The only suggestion for a change would be for the dessert menu, I have never been excited by the choices offered. Very minor issue though. I would eat here every week if I was not on a budget. The friendliest staff ever. Always an enjoyable experience.

My first gig harbor dining experience, and it was pretty good. Waiters were around when they needed to be, no more no less, and quite courteous. Prices are more than your average franchise restaurant, if that's what your use to eating... expect about 15-25 for a meal, but its super good :). The only downfall I would have to say is the time you'll spend in there; Il Lucanos definitely isn't your typical restaurant in the way that you can expect to be there a while, as it's not to objective to shove a meal in your face and push you out as soon as possible.I was at a table of 3 and it took me about an hour and a half, so if you come starving, get a salad to hold you over. Asides from that everything is great, looks clean with a nice atmosphere.

Il Lucano is the BEST Italian Restaurant in the Puget Sound area and better than the restaurants we've been to in Italy and on the Italian coast!!!! Even after our travels we find ourselves going back time after time to Il Lucano. This is the Puget Sound area's "secret" Italian restaurant located in Gig Harbor, Washington that has the best Italian food including seafood combo cuisine. Azusa and Michael are the perfect match for entertainment and with a singing chef to make your evening Amore special!!! If you want the best food (freshest ingredients), good family run service and top 5 star chef cuisine than Il Lucano is your place to go. We've brought friends, family and customers from all over the country and world to Il Lucano in Gig Harbor, Washington. You can not go wrong with Michael's linguine pescatore (my favorite) or any of their daily specials. If you haven't been here before and want to try a cuisine, we suggest you try one of their special dishes you cannot go wrong. First, second date customers, young and old alike will love this restaurant. It reminds me of the many places my husband and I have been to in Italy, but better and with the same zest for flavor, presentation, passion for food and by far exceptional family run service. As world travelers it is nice to know we found our secret Amore restaurant in our own backyard. Good for many dates to come. Thank you Il Lucano! Heidi Puget Sound, Washington

Went there on a Thursday afternoon around 1:30 pm. There was only one other table occupied. We received quick service with a delightful waiter who explained the specials on the menu. This being my first visit to Il Lucano, I wanted spaghetti and meatballs so I could get a good sampling of the sauce and meat they use. It was phenomenal!! Rather than a regular "sauce" they had marinara (which scared me a little when I ordered it) but it had ssoooo much flavor it was totally awesome!! Lots of garlic and something in there (that I'm still trying to figure out) that it made it taste so very fresh and flavorful. My husband had a pasta/seafood dish (don't remember the name of it) that was also very good. He liked my dish better, but I thought his dish had a whole lot of seafood flavor - which IS what he ordered. I thought both dishes were fabulous. Also offered was a baguette with flavored olive oil which was very, very tasty. I think it was garlic oil with herbs, but it was very, very good. The waiter offered more after we ate all he served us the first round. Well, I've lived in this area for 7 years now and have finally (for the FIRST time) found a good Italian restaurant. It's still a little far from my home (about 25 miles) but I plan to go as often as I can.

We actually gave this place two chances. Both times we were not very impressed. The first time the lasagna lacked flavor. Just not very tasty. The second time we were there I had the cannelloni. It was just ok. That is the theme, the food is just ok. The worst part for us and the main reason we will never return is the service. There are a few tables and from what we can see there is only one woman (who we think is one of the owners, could be wrong on that) serving the tables, while the other women seat and bring water. Now the waitress was very impatient and would not offer any suggestions as to her favorites when we asked. She said "Of Course Everything is Great" in a very frustrated voice. We were treated as if we were just passing through. Never mind we actually live in Gig Harbor. The wait for food and drink is long. The bread leaves a lot to be desired. In our opinion if the owner just sat people and had the other employees serve the tables things would run smoother. We were generous with 2 stars.

Have had dinner there once, absolutely awesome and decided I didn't want to cook Christmas dinner so stopped and ask the chef if he could make something I could finish at home. He's a great chef and what a hoot. Very Italian and very specific about what he could and could not do for me. He ended up making me a pan of lasagna with the last three pieces vegetarian to satisfy that side of the family. When we picked it up, he had my husband and I come into the kitchen and we almost got an Italian cooking lesson to make sure we did it properly. He also made us an antipasto tray, large enough to feed an army. The pieces of lasagna were enormous and believe me no one went hungry. We live in Tacoma and now go across the bridge twice a month to eat there.

Lucanos is our favorite local go-to place for lunch or dinner. Great food, love Pepe the waiter, and chef Michele will make almost anything you desire. We've been going there since MIchele bought the place from the previous owner, and have rarely had a bad meal (MIchele does go on vacation occasionally). Some previous reviewer said something about fake Italian accents - well, no , sorry, both Pepe and Michele are the real deal. My kids rate all italian restaurants on two things - the red sauce and the gnocci. Both here are home made, both delicious. After traveling through Italy last month and tasting every variety of gnocci they unanimously agreed that Michele's gnocchi sorrento was better than anyone's. He also makes a dang good pizza quattro formaggi, full of feta, gorgonzola, parmesan and mozzarella. We also like the chicken piccata and marsala, good servings of chicken mounded on pasta, spinach, and tasty sauces. Yes, his bread is plain white kinda yucky. But it is exactly like the bread served in every trattoria in Italy that we visited. I call it "shut up and wait for your food" bread. This is not Olive Garden. Though the previous reviewer might be of italian origin he must have never been to italy. Lucano is also the only place I've been to that makes zabaglione the old fashioned way, with marsala, egg, cream, hand beaten until frothy and served warm and delicious and dangerously alcoholic. Though not on the menu, he'll also make authentic cacio e pepe and a bruschetta to die for. Save your money - don't go to Italy, just eat here.

At the Il Lucano Restaraunt, they were able to customize a dish for me that was not on the menu. The wait staff are highly spirited, and the owner Lucano himself is 10 times more so. Really wonderful to get caught up in it. Wow, am I in Italy?!? Love it! The food is fantastic as well as the ambiance. Thumbs up all the way! Also found out that Lucano has a line of gluten free pasta for those who have issues with that. Way cool!

We have eaten here twice. The first time was AMAZING! The waitress knew everything about the menu and all of the wines. The second time, the waiter was in a huge hurry, though I cut him some slack because it was Friday night. But he barely had time to speak to us, and though I asked for no cheese on my pasta, it still had a lot on it. There was also an Asian waitress who seemed to be having some sort of nervous breakdown and was yelling at all the other wait staff right in front of us. We will definitely return, just not on a busy night.

Food and service are both excellent. It's rare these days to have the owners/chefs come out and entertain their patrons and really makes a difference in one's dining experience. This is definitely Sicilian-style cuisine with lots of tomato sauce and tons of cheese. The pizza is great and I have no doubt the monstrous calzone is as well. The only downside is probably the bread, which seemed pretty uninspired.

We went here right after work and were the only people in the place, which was okay. The food was average and was way overpriced. We got 2 of the specials, somewhere around $25 each, I don't believe it came with a salad, so we had to pay for that separate. It was tasty, but did not warrant the cost. We did one drink a piece and an after dinner coffee drink, our bill was higher than expect. The service was great though, which I would expect because we were the only ones in the place. Overall, I would not go back because for that price I expect a lot more from an Italian restaurant.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
